What causes a transformer explosion to be green?
Some time ago out in the country, we saw lightning strike an electric pole, and the current apparently carried down a line about 1/2 mile away and vaporized a transformer.
It was at night. When the lightning struck and did this, the entire sky turned green. I’m not talking just a bright light, I’m talking an incredible release of light energy like in a very small nuclear bomb. It was like a green sun came out for over 2 seconds before fading out. After the green faded, in the distance you could see the hot metal slag particles raining down at the transformer site like giant sparks from a hundred feet high or so. It was the most spectacular event I have ever witnessed actually.
I’m curious, what caused this metal vaporization to be green?
When copper burns at lower temp, it produces a green flame. But at elevated temperature, it is typically blue/white. I can’t quite figure out what creates such tremendous light energy output as I saw here, in the color green.
Copper emits green light when vaporized. A flame test shows green when copper is present. Copper is used in fireworks when a green flame is wanted.
