Vibrating noise coming from engine happens worse when I turn on the AC could this be tension pulley?
I’ve noticed when my car is in idle at a light or in park sometimes I hear a vibrating noise that sounds like it’s coming front of the car like a type of rattling. It only happens when I’m in idle not while driving… I’ve noticed when I turn on the AC i get the same type of rattle except a little more loud.
Could this be a tension pulley or what?
Also if I don’t fix this could this lead to bigger problems?
Sounds like something is loose. When the AC is on, an engine typically will run slower, shakes a bit more, and the thing that is rattling will shake more as well. You’ll have to put your head under the hood (with it open) and locate the exact source. Getting underneath the car when it’s on jack stands also might help pinpoint the cause.
I don’t think it’s the tension pulley per se, but they’re cheap to replace. maybe $20-$60. If your over 60K miles you might be due anyway. If you haven’t yet had a timing belt replacement (assuming you don’t have a timing chain) then have them replaced at the same time.
As far as the bearing goes, if you don’t fix it two things could happen. The noise will get louder as the bearings wear at an increasing rate causing a annoying whining sound that increases in pitch as the engine turns faster, or the pulley bearing could freeze up and destroy the belt, then the engine will immediately follow.
