1994 Honda Civic Air Conditioning Low side pressure gets real high?
I put the guages on the car yesterday. They read 40 on the low side and about 110 on the high side which I thoguht was right on the money. I started the car and cranked up the A/C. Guages stayed the same and cold air started to blow. Blew good and cold for about 10 minutes, then the air warmed up and the low side pressure started climbing. When it got to about 90 I decided to shut it down.
What could be the problem?
a few answers to other questions can help narrow it down. Is the high side pressure normal?
if the low side is high and the high side is normal then you probably have a bad espansion valve that is hung open or an overcharged system. you can confirm an overcharged system by spraying the condensor with a garden hose and watching the pressures. if the pressures drop then you have an overcharge condition.
the other possibility is that the evaporator temp sensor (thermostat) is bad and that is causing the expansion valve to stay open. that is a very common failure on Hondas
lastly, the evaproator could be freezing up; that would happen if the evap temp sensor (thermostat) was bad as well.
so you have three possibilities: the evaporator temp sensor bad causing the evaporator to freeze up or to hold the expansion valve open; or the expansion valve is hung open; or the system is overcharged.
probably the thermostat if experience counts
